2022 Hermitage Rouge, Le Gréal, Domaine Marc Sorrel, Rhône

Description

The portmanteau name covers the component vineyards of Le Méal (90%) and Greffieux (10%). The alcohol (14.5%) is lower than the Rocoules white – the reds were picked after August’s rain, which swelled the berries, and the whole-bunch process lowers alcohol a little. This is detailed with earthy power in the lower registers. Dark chocolate, blueberry, tobacco, leather and Asian spice swirl above.

Critics reviews

Cask sample. Such a meaty and rich nose, slightly animal and wild. The palate has a cool attack and then come the tannins, which are marked, firm and structured with a core of graphite, smoked meat and herbs. Needs a lot of time for those tannins to integrate, yet there is a generous, rich fruit core to allow that.

Darkly coloured. Wonderful nose – very Hermitage in its meaty, smoky, roasted notes. Surprisingly fresh and lively for such a hot and dry vintage. Powerful, with quite marked acidity and robust, slightly fibrous tannins that will take time to soften. The finish is long with great vitality, this is a very genuine, authentic Hermitage and doesn't even feel like it comes from a hot vintage. There is a slight green note to the tannins, which arguably aren't as elegant as in some years, but it's a wine that speaks strongly of terroir. From lieux-dits Le Méal and Les Greffieux. 7% Marsanne and Roussanne coplanted with the Syrah in Le Méal.

About this wine

Hermitage

Hermitage

The most famous of all the northern Rhône appellations, its 120 hectares produce tiny quantities of very long-lived reds. The vines were grown in Roman times, although local folklore claims their origins to be 600 years earlier. The wines are powerful, with a deep colour and firm tannins, and the potential to age for many decades. The best Hermitage is produced from several climats blended together.
