Description

This cuvée is made from three mostly flat, stony hectares of parcels, including Clos du Roy, Longeroies and Es Chezots. Vines are 10 to 30 years old, and like in recent years, there is around 30% whole-bunch in the blend. Some élevage in 500-litre barrels and 600-litre piéces highlight the wine’s fresh character. Well balanced with juicy, tart fruit, this is already delicious.

The name refers to a small tower located just behind the domaine; the fruit comes from 6 different lieux-dits.

A more floral-suffused nose presents a range of aromas that include violet, dark currant and black cherry. The very supple and fleshy middleweight flavours possess a seductive texture while exhibiting enough depth and persistence in the balanced finale to be interesting. This, too, could easily be enjoyed young.

Just racked. A rich purple colour. Inky and concentrated, slightly lactic, with good acidity behind, a mix of red and black fruit, and slight gamey sweetness at the finish, but I think nothing sinister. Plenty of wine here once again.

The 2022 Marsannay Cuvée St Urbain had been racked the previous month for bottling in January or February. Including one-third whole bunches, the attractive nose offers brambly black fruit mixed with graphite touches. The medium-bodied palate has edgy tannins, just a splash of balsamic infusing the mainly black fruit with a composed finish. Give it a few months in bottle.

Marsannay is the northernmost village and the only appellation in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, France, producing red and white wines. It is renowned for its red wines, primarily made from Pinot Noir grapes, but also creates a limited quantity of white wines from Chardonnay. Marsannay's terroir, characterised by limestone and clay soils, imparts a unique mineral complexity to its wines.
