Description

Named after the wife of King Charlemagne as Jim Clendenen considered this to be a playful reflection on the original plantings in Corton Charlemagne. Made from a blend of Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc it has always been a delightful addition to the range. 2022 has risen to this standard again. As the wine opens from its travel slumber, what first strikes me is the surprising floral notes as well as a sweet spice element.

The 16 months in oak helps give a warming toast and richness that helps make the wine incredibly round and balanced. Throughout the palate and nose there are layers of complexity that make this wine incredibly enjoyable. Like discovering a new place with a kind friend. Exciting but not shocking. Every element supports the whole. Beautiful salinity with fleeting lemon cream moments. This is perfectly balanced by the wine's tight acidity and minerality. I am a bit of a fan!

The 2022 White Hildegard Estate is superb. This blend of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Aligoté fared exceptionally well in this vintage. Orchard fruit, citrus peel, white pepper and slate lend notable cut. This vibrant, steely white marries freshness and textural resonance. It's one of the top wines here in 2022.
