Description

Punching well above its weight, Laurent Daniel and his family’s gorgeous gigondas is as good as this southern Rhône appellation gets. With a heady scent of lavender and sage leading on to a soft, silky, spice-infused palate, it’s a revelation.

This 75% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah blend brims with aromas of dark cherries with perfumed notes of cigar box and dusty spice. Blackberries and blackcurrants ooze through on the moreish, fresh palate which is packed with ripe fruit yet not at all heavy. A pure bergamot lift comes through alongside the chalky tannins on the long, savoury finish.

Gigondas

Gigondas has been feted for its high-quality wines since Roman times, although it wasn’t really until it was classified as a Côtes du Rhône Villages in 1966 that it began to realise its potential. It achieved AC status in 1971 and today produces some of the finest, most underrated and under-priced wines in the Rhône valley; although, for the last two of these at least, probably not for much longer.
