Description

A pretty wine in 2022, with an appealing simple ripeness. Vines up to 35 years old are selected (the oldest are in the Vieilles Vignes), and this year the élevage has reverted to only in tank. There is something in the limestone of La Roche Vineuse that gives this wine a salty Chablis tang.

The 2022 Mâcon La Roche Vineuse, raised in stainless steel on the lees, has a pretty, white peach-scented bouquet with a touch of wax. The palate is simple, balanced and a little soft on the mid-palate with a pithy finish. It does its job with minimal fuss - a decent introduction to Merlin’s range.

Ripe and vaguely exotic aromas are composed mainly of white peach, citrus confit, and a suggestion of lychee. The exceptionally generous, round, and easy-going middle-weight flavours possess a plush mouthfeel, concluding in a warm, sappy finish that offers acceptable depth and persistence. I would advise serving this on the cooler side, as the warmth becomes more apparent as it sits in the glass.

Young vines, but now that means up to 35 years old. All made in stainless steel—pale colour with a fresh bouquet, including some lighter Mâcon notes. There is more tension here on the palate, with attractive length. Very accessible already.
