2022 Rosso di Montalcino, Lisini, Tuscany, Italy

Description

Previously matured exclusively in Slavonian oak botti, Lisini’s Rosso di Montalcino now sees eight months in concrete before spending eight months in large Slavonian oak. This comes from a selection of the youngest Brunello vineyards (vines less than 15 years old), and is harvested a week earlier than the fruit destined for the Brunello, preserving acidity and freshness.

Alessandro Margioni, the paradoxically “new” winemaker (he started in 2020) thinks this is exactly what a Rosso should be: not too serious or like a Brunello, but a wine of pure pleasure and joy. This is Lisini’s Rosso as you know it, but with everything finely tuned. Pure, bursting raspberry and strawberry, with a playful energy and soft texture.

Critics reviews

Eric Guido 91/100

The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is impossible to ignore. It is vividly fruit-forward, with masses of crushed blackberry and cherry complemented by autumnal spice. This opens with a pretty inner sweetness and crisp acidity, casting mineral-laced wild berry fruits across the palate. While gently tannic, the 2022 remains fresh, ending with licorice notes and a spicy sensation.

Black olive and tree bark, chestnut and iron, fragrantly earthy and red-fruited – there’s a pleasing hauteur to this Rosso which does not condescend to sweetness of fruit for its impact. It has the real stamp of Montalcino terroir. With its assertive tannins and crisp, lively acidity, it could benefit from another year in bottle before broaching, and will drink well for a decade. Lisini's Rosso undergoes the same long maceration of up to a month as the Brunello, and it ages for 12 months in large Slavonian casks.

About this wine

Rosso di Montalcino

Rosso di Montalcino

Rosso di Montalcino, a red wine from Tuscany's Montalcino region, is a youthful counterpart to the more reputable Brunello di Montalcino.
