2022 Bourgogne, Les Bons Bâtons, Domaine Michèle & Patrice Rion, Burgundy

Description

This is from two domaine vineyards near Clos de la Maréchale in Prémeux-Prissey – Chaillots and Roichottees – and purchased fruit from Bons Batons in Chambolle-Musigny. Each represents roughly a third of the blend. This is lovely with the spicy, limestone feel of Prémeaux and perfumed elegance of Chambolle. Juicy, creamy and saline, it will offer much pleasure in the short and medium term.

The 2022 Bourgogne Rouge Bon Baton had not yet been bottled and was racked the previous week. It contains 15-20% whole bunches. The nose is more complex, deeper and lusher than the Bourgogne Pinot Noir. The palate is well-balanced with a structured opening. It has quite firm tannins and mainly black rather than red fruit with a tinge of graphite towards the finish. Afford this a year in bottle to shave its edges.

A fine, even purple. The bouquet is significantly more stylish than the regular pinot, in a refined dark but fresh strawberry, with good acid balance here, fine tannins and impressive length. As always, this behaves more like a village wine than a generic one. 15 barrels in 0.75.

About this wine

Bourgogne

Bourgogne

In the Burgundy hierarchy, “Bourgogne” denotes the entry level of the classification system. This is a so-called “regional” appellation, theoretically covering the entire vineyard area of Burgundy. This is distinct from the more geographically precise village-level, Premier Cru and Grand Cru designations. The two most common Bourgogne-level wines are Bourgogne Blanc (“White Burgundy”) and Bourgogne Rouge (“Red Burgundy”).
