2022 Gevrey-Chambertin, Benjamin Leroux, Burgundy

Description

This is an important cuvée for Ben, comprising 51 barrels this year (although the equivalent of 16 barrels are actually aged in foudres). Recent additions from the northern Brochon sector, much in vogue because of its spicy freshness, are 21 of the barrels. There is about 15 percent whole bunch and this is broadly textured, with excellent persistence.

Critics reviews

Allen Meadows 89-91/100

From Les Seuvrées, Les Jeunes Rois et Champerrier du Dessus.

Exceptionally pretty, even perfumed, aromas of cool red berries are nuanced by hints of earth and the sauvage. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the detailed and delicious, if not especially dense, flavours that flash a subtle minerality on the lightly austere, balanced and lingering finish. While built to repay mid-term keeping, this should actually be approachable young if desired.

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a delightful bouquet of brambly red berry fruit mixed with sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation, pure, elegant, and quite persistent on the finish. I much prefer this to the Vosne-Romanée Village, and it comes recommended. Lovely.

Aged in single and double barrels for the first year, 15% new wood, then racked to foudre. An even and charming purple. The bouquet is delicious, half southern end strawberries) half Brochon richer fruit) together makes a great blend, with excellent energy at the back. And the good news is that there is plenty of it: 16,000 bottles!

About this wine

Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest wine-producing village in Burgundy’s Côte d'Or. Located in the far north of the Côtes de Nuits, the classic style is typically deeper in colour, firmer in body and more tannic in structure than most red Burgundy. While in the past there have been myriad underperformers here, the overall quality is now higher than ever and the best can develop into the most complete and long-lived Pinot Noir in the world.
