Incredibly, this is produced from vines planted in 1913 and 1922, on very chalky soil. The nose is beautiful, very floral and expressive. The texture is like crushed silk, with rich fruit on the mid-palate and a salivating finish. There’s a lovely limestone freshness to this wine.

The 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Grands Liards also comes from old vines raised in the same ways at the Reine Joly cuvée. This is a step up from the 2021, with red berry fruit, sous-bois and light bay leaf scents. The oak is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, finely balanced with a slight chalkiness towards the pleasing finish. Delicious.
