2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge, Champs de Morjot, Domaine Philippe Colin, Burgundy

Description

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Champ de Morjot (Rouge) has an attractive nose with brambly red fruit, undergrowth, damp moss and light tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and fine acidity; the 2021 is quite structured with a very peppery finish. It does need a little more finesse and persistence, but it should mature well in bottle.

7 x 500-litre barrels made.

It is a little deeper in colour, ruby purple. The bouquet shows a mild reduction. There is a considerable weight of fruit at the back of the palate and certainly more structure, both tannins and acidity. Wait a while longer for this than the Santenay, but it is worth having in the cellar.

There is just enough reduction present to push the underlying fruit to the background. More interesting are the beautifully textured medium-weight flavours with an excellent punch that carries over to the lightly rustic, balanced, lingering finale. While this could use better depth, more should develop, and this is really quite good for a Chassagne village. It's also worth considering, provided you're willing to hold it for at least a few years.
