Description

The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot.

Sitting cheek by jowl with Sassicaia and Ornellaia’s vineyards, and coming from the outstanding 2021 vintage, it should come as no surprise that this wine is an absolute triumph. The best parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon were used and underwent month-long macerations – only possible in truly exceptional years. Fermentation was done in stainless steel before the wine was produced, which lasted 12 months in 500hL barrels and eight months in botti grandi.

The fruit has a beautiful, crystalline purity: bright, glossy blackcurrant and vivid black cherry, supported by savoury dried herbs, sweet tomato and earthy depth. This has a roaring Bolgherese soul while retaining sophistication, balanced energy and class.

Mid crimson. Sweet, floral nose. It’s a little simple, and the fruit isn’t quite married with the oak treatment yet. Drying finish.

A new DOC in the coastal Maremma region, Bolgheri first rose to prominence during the 1970s with the emergence of the so-called Super Tuscan wines like Ornellaia and Sassicaia. Having won universal acclaim and selling for unprecedented prices, the authorities relented and awarded Bolgheri its own DOC. The actions of the Super Tuscans inspired a generation in Italy, even if some of the wines here have lost a little of their lustre since.
