2021 Chassagne-Montrachet, Morgeot, Clos de la Chapelle, 1er Cru, Domaine de la Vougeraie, Burgundy

Description

The Vougeraie holdings continue to grow, the Boisset family having purchased this walled monopole from the Duc de Magenta in 2022. 2.87 of the 3.66 hectares are planted with Chardonnay, with the grapes picked in 3 different phases over a week to make sure the grapes were at optimum ripeness. The nose offers wonderfully ripe, rich citrus fruit and a touch of peach, accompanied by a hint of vanilla oak. The palate is powerful and dense with a firm, textural grip, a touch of orange peel and a spicy, smoky oak note to the finish. A special wine from a special site that sits comfortably alongside the wonderful Clos Blanc in La Vougeraie’s selection of Monopole vineyards.

Mid-pale lemon. Great material! Apple, citrus, baked pie dough. Solid and profound, but lashed with zesty, ripping acidity. Oak lends some nice spicy notes complimenting really ample depth and power.

A new 4.48 ha monopole, of which 3.5 ha is planted to chardonnay; 2021 is the first vintage.

A different aromatic profile presents notes of petrol, rosemary oil, spice and an interesting whiff of orange peel. There is excellent volume and punch to the bigger-bodied flavours that also possess fine richness while delivering very fine persistence on the lemony, clean and very dry finale. This could use better depth but a few years of keeping should be beneficial.

Drink from 2028 onward.

The first vintage of this Monopole vineyard purchased from the Duchesse de Magenta! The yield is decent at 33 hl/ha. 20% new wood, made in the same way as the other whites. There is a suggestion of considerable power here and distinction. Kicks on beautifully on the palate, white fruit with a few plums in the background, very good acidity, and persistent. A fine first outing.
