The pure and delicate Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Gravains comes from what this estate considers to be young vines of 47 years of age. The fine limestone soil here gives the wine a perfumed lift, creamy mid-palate fruit and silken, talc-like tannins that coat the mouth.

The 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Gravains 1er Cru, matured in 30% new oak, has an expressive bouquet with Morello cherries and crushed strawberry, well-defined though not as complex as the 2020. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and fine acidity. It is a little chewy towards the finish, but its edges will smooth down with a bit of bottle age. Moderate length. Drink over the next decade.

Here the brooding nose is distinctly earthy with its array of very cool dark berries, the sauvage and a hint of smoked meat character. There is excellent volume to the rich and intensely mineral-driven flavours that possess fine depth and persistence on the balanced finale. This is lovely and I particularly like the nuanced tannin/fruit/acid interplay.

Drink from 2028 onward.
