Aromas of sun-warmed hay mingle with dog rose, forest floor and botanical herb on the full-bodied 2021 Montefico from La Cà Nova. Showing an earthy finesse, the savory palate delivers juicy red cherry, truffle, ground clove and a hint of black olive alongside taut, polished tannins. It’s still primary, with vibrant acidity and will benefit with a few more years in the cellar.

The 2021 Barbaresco Montefico Vigna Bric Mentina is redolent of dried herbs, mint, spice, pipe tobacco and cedar. Exotic and beguiling, especially in its bouquet, the 2021 is just starting to open. I would prefer to cellar it for a few years, though. Readers will find a mid-weight, nuanced Barbaresco loaded with complexity and dynamic energy. The sculpted, youthfully austere style is classic Montefico.
