2021 St Joseph Rouge, Les Granilites, M. Chapoutier, Rhône

Description

Grapes are grown on the south-easterly, fine granite soils of the southern communes of Charnas, Tournon and Mauves. There is a ripe red fruit nose, overlayed with flint minerality and black pepper. There is good juicy concentration to the mid-palate that brims with fresh and candied berry fruit, while a little smoky spice simmers in the background.

Critics reviews

Cask sample. Very bright fruits, floral and earthy spice with a smoked note beneath. Quite tight and taut on the palate with tannins that are firm – dark fruits with good acidity. A little bit drying on the mid palate. Meaty style.

About this wine

Saint-Joseph

Saint-Joseph

St Joseph is the second-largest appellation in the Northern Rhône with 50 growers producing wines from over 600 hectares of vineyards. Established in 1956, over 90 percent of the wine is red – made exclusively from the Syrah grape; the whites are typically a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne. The best St Josephs are still produced in its original heartland, between St Jean-de-Muzols and Mauves.
