Description

This is a vineyard that Carel knows well, from his previous position at Domaine d'Ardhuy. As a lower vineyard, its style is more towards perfume than body and this characteristic is strongly to the fore this year, with violet and strawberry notes. It contains just 33% whole bunch, with a rewarding velure texture.

Mid crimson. A pleasing nose in a lighter red fruit register, while 30% whole bunch vinification keeps a fresher aspect. The stems show in the white pepper notes at the back. Some red berries, a little zest of orange, no more than medium bodied and quite long.

Background hints of wood influence easily allow the aromas of plum, violet and forest floor to shine. Once again, the texture of the medium-weight flavours is super-sleek while offering excellent intensity on the lightly stony, if ever-so-mildly lean finale. This will clearly need a few years and may well add flesh with time in bottle.

The 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Clous 1er Cru has an engaging, quite zesty, citrus-fresh bouquet with Japanese yuzu and Clementine infusing the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-knit, well-balanced and filigreed tannins. A judicious touch of spice enters as it fans out on the finish—one of the best from Camille Giroud this year.
