Allen Meadows 89-91/100

From Les Cras and Les Avaux.

An ultra-fresh nose freely expresses its aromas of lilac, red cherry, and green tea wisps. The medium-weight flavours have slightly better density and conclude in a youthfully austere and persistent but not really lean finale. This, too, should add weight and flesh with a few years of cellaring.

In short years such as 2021, Cras and Avaux are blended. One third whole bunch vinification. A slightly fuller ruby crimson. There is a depth of raspberry fruit over and above the preceding wines, kept lighter by the admixture of some stems. The palate is intriguing as the fruit and the stems mingle, with fair acidity, medium plus weight, and some cherry notes emerging behind—a slightly peppery finish.

Two barrels were produced.

Due to the small volume, the 2021 Beaune 1er Cru is a blend of Les Cras and Les Avaux. Fragrant red cherry and strawberry pastilles on the nose this is straightforward but charming. The palate is medium-bodied, taut and linear, quite pure in style, with fine tannins. This builds nicely to a structured yet elegant finish. Very fine.

About this wine

Beaune

Beaune

The wines of Beaune are usually on the lighter side, especially if from the flatter vineyards on the Pommard side, or the sandier soils towards Savigny. The sturdiest wines with the greatest depth of flavour come from the steeper slopes overlooking the town itself. Beaune is also home to several of the region’s best known merchants such as Maisons Louis Jadot and Joseph Drouhin.
