2021 Barrua, Isola dei Nuraghi, Punica, Sardinia, Italy

Description

The 2021 Agricola Punica Barrua is a stunning red from the island of Sardinia. It is proof that, with expert backing and great terroir, venturing further afield in your wine journey can repay great rewards. Combining Super Tuscan expertise – from oenologist Dr Giacomo Tachis, and Marquis Incisa Della Rocchetta, winemaker of Sassicaia – with the Sardinian know-how of the Santadi family, Barrua exemplifies a unique expression of its place.

Rich and dense, made with predominantly old vine Carignan with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it is a wine that delivers great pleasure. Generous fruit, including blackberries and plums, is to the fore, with background notes of chocolate, leather and spices. There is no doubt this is a powerful wine, but with sleek tannins, it has a velvety mouth-feel that coats luxuriously, showing its class.

The wine matures for 18 months in French oak barriques (40% new) and is then rested for up to two months in cement tanks. It is then transferred to bottle and kept for 6 months. Accessible in its youth, it will also keep happily for 10+ years.

Tasting note

The 2021 Barrua comes from the noble stock of people behind Super Tuscan heavyweight Sassicaia and from a cracking vintage in Italy. These two factors come together to produce a scintillating wine of depth and quality that belies its humble price point. The expected rich cassis notes shone through, but the wine's new ethereal and aromatic edge has made it the best incarnation I have tasted. This would be a perfect wine for steak or at a barbecue.

Critics reviews

Coffee, dried flowers, prunes and dried cranberries on the nose of this ripe red. It’s rich, spicy and dense, with a full body and chewy tannins. Big and concentrated wine. Try in 2026.
