Critics reviews

Neal Martin 86-88/100

The 2021 Pommard Les Cras conveys a sense of presence on the nose, a mélange of red and black fruit, cassis and pressed violet. The palate is medium-bodied with a very velvety texture, sweet and candied with a plush finish that just lacks some Pommard DNA. Yet, it is going to be seductive in the near term.

The cool, earthy red berry scents have herbal tea nuances. The delicious and attractively vibrant, if not especially dense, flavours possess excellent detail on the firm, youthfully austere, and sneaky long finish, which isn't exactly lean but certainly not seductive.

Mid crimson. The bouquet is more angular than either of the Volnay wines. Mouth filling, generous red fruit, not too much in the way of tannin, though a touch more structure even so. Decent volume in the mouth.

About this wine

Pommard

Pommard

The most powerful red wines of the Côte de Beaune emanate from Pommard, where complex soils with a high proportion of iron-rich clay produce deep-coloured, relatively tannic wines. Two vineyards stand out: the lower part of Les Rugiens, which has been mooted for promotion to Grand Cru status, and the five-hectare, walled Clos des Epéneaux, monopoly of Comte Armand.
