2021 Côte-Rôtie, Esprit de Blonde, Domaine Pierre Gaillard, Rhône

Description

The grapes for this wine come from the Le Mollard vineyard to the west of the Côte Blonde, on gneiss soils. The nose is bright with fresh herbs, rose petals, and raspberries. There is an approachable palate of wild strawberries and hedgerow fruit, complete with silky tannins and light touches of sweet spice. It is very elegant and refined.

Critics reviews

Alistair Cooper MW 16.5/20

Tasted blind. Sandalwood, fig, clove and pepper on the nose with juicy red fruits. On the palate, soft and sweet fruit, coconut, white pepper with velvety tannins, moderate acidity and a layered, generous finish.

The 2021 Côte Rôtie Esprit De Blonde is more red-fruited, with a softer, rounded style that does well in the vintage. Wild strawberries, raspberries, flowers, spice, and loamy earth all define the nose. It's medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, and elegant on the palate, with fine tannins.

A smoky, sparky style on the nose of Szechuan pepper, wood smoke and cinnamon oak. Rounded with a good sense of ripeness, teamed with good acidity and sappy fruits on the firm, dry finish. Very well-balanced and fresh.

About this wine

Côte-Rôtie

Côte-Rôtie

Côte-Rôtie stands as one of the Rhône Valley’s most revered appellations, producing Syrah-based wines of remarkable depth and complexity. Its steep, sun-soaked slopes have been cultivated since Roman times, yet the region’s modern reputation for excellence is a relatively recent triumph. Today, Côte-Rôtie is synonymous with precision, elegance, and longevity—qualities that place its finest bottles alongside the world’s most sought-after wines.
