Critics reviews

Jane Anson 87/100

40hl/h yield 35hl/h yield after selection). Eric Boissenot consultant.

There are dark fruits and Pauillac typicity, with baking spices, undergrowth, and slate character, but the acidity of the finish highlights the angular tannins.

The 2021 Lacoste-Borie has an attractive, earthy nose with touches of warm gravel infusing the black fruit, lighter than recent vintages but clean and fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly tangy entry and a little more boldness and fruit concentration than the nose suggests, with a liberal splash of black pepper on the finish. This may be an earlier-drinking Lacoste-Borie, but it will age nicely over 12 to 15 years.

The 2021 Lacoste-Borie is a very pretty second wine. Crushed rose petal, mint, blood orange and white pepper add lovely aromatic presence to this silky, racy Pauillac. The balance here favours understatement and freshness in an almost Pinot-like way.

Lovely classic Cabernet typicity on the palate, the green pepper, the eucalyptus, liquorice, crushed stone and such freshness and mintiness. This has power and structure; it’s clearly intense and concentrated, but the tannins are so well executed. The acidity gifts lift while the other elements settle on the tongue, really pronounced, filling the mouth. This is seductive, no wallflower with satin tannins. It’s a blockbuster of a second wine here. One of the more potent and powerful second wines but with excellent capacity to give enjoyment, screaming: ‘Drink me!’.

Perfumed and nicely polished second wine of Grand-Puy-Lacoste with pretty sandalwood, blackberry and currant notes. Some fresh herbs and mocha, too. Nicely framed with fleshy tannins.

The 2021 Lacoste-Borie from Grand-Puy-Lacoste has a deep garnet-purple color. It is a little subdued to begin, offering glimpses at redcurrant jelly and stewed plum scents, plus hints of tar and black truffles. The medium-bodied palate is lively with firm, grainy tannins and plenty of expressive black fruits, finishing with a savory lift.

About this wine

Pauillac

Pauillac

The aristocrat of the Médoc boasts 75 percent of the region’s First Growths, with Grand Cru Classés representing 84 percent of production. Pauillac's First Growths each have their own unique characteristics: Ch. Lafite Rothschild produces the region’s most aromatically-complex and subtly-flavoured wine, while – with its high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon – Ch. Mouton Rothschild can produce a decadently rich, fleshy and exotic wine.
