2021 Bourgogne Rouge, Les Cras, Olivier Merlin

Description

This is from vines from cuttings of old Pinot Fin – taken from the Clos des Epeneaux around 20 years ago – planted on a steep, south-facing limestone slope. Usually there is a little whole bunch but everything was destalked this year. There wasn't any frost damage but the skins and stalks were not very mature. A light extraction for some gentle, crunchy easy red fruit.

Critics reviews

Allen Meadows 86/100

Vinified with 50% whole clusters.

High-toned aromas include cherry, raspberry, spice wisps, and a hint of herbal tea. The sleek and nicely intense flavours possess fine delineation before terminating in a clean and nicely dry, if somewhat short, finish. This is refreshing, but it would best be served with appropriate food to help round off the backend.

The 2021 Bourgogne Rouge Les Cras is fully destemmed and has a nose of fresh red cherry, redcurrant, and raspberry. The palate is balanced, easygoing, and lighter in style, with a touch of bell pepper on the finish. It is fine, but early drinking.

About this wine

Bourgogne

Bourgogne

In the Burgundy hierarchy, “Bourgogne” denotes the entry level of the classification system. This is a so-called “regional” appellation, theoretically covering the entire vineyard area of Burgundy. This is distinct from the more geographically precise village-level, Premier Cru and Grand Cru designations. The two most common Bourgogne-level wines are Bourgogne Blanc (“White Burgundy”) and Bourgogne Rouge (“Red Burgundy”).
