2021 Mâcon-la Roche Vineuse, Les Cras, Olivier Merlin, Burgundy

Description

This cuvée is from old vines planted on a steep, south-facing site with high limestone content. It’s a wine which surprises in its ability to age, and typically shows at its best at least 3 years from bottling. This is vivid and alive, full of limestone freshness and with tingling acidity that will drive the wine for many years.

Cask sample

Much more nerve than the Vieilles Vignes bottling. Easy to like – very welcoming, in contrast to the more tense wines of La Soufrandière.

A high-toned and airy nose is comprised by the essence of petrol and petrol nuances while offering up a floral top note. The nicely rich and tension-filled middleweight flavours exude a subtle bead of minerality on the bitter lemon-inflected, moderately dry and slightly less austere and structured finale.

The 2021 Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Les Cras has a more bashful nose at the moment, with yellow fruit and subtle tertiary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly terse entry, fresh acidity, very saline and malic towards the finish. I feel that the Vieilles Vignes has a little more complexity.
