2021 Volnay, Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur, Burgundy

Description

This Volnay comes from the Les Echards and Les Aussy village vineyards. The wine has seen no new oak, just second and third-fill barrels. It builds nicely and the palate has fine lines and smooth, violet fruit. The more air the wine receives, the more it builds. Not overly complex, but a very creditable village wine giving plenty of pleasure.

Jancis Robinson MW 16/20

Bottled mid-December

Pale crimson. Juicy and lively with very direct fruit. Polished tannins and a hint of chestnut flavour. Reasonably transparent.

The 2021 Volnay Village comes from Es Echard and Les Aussy in equal amounts. It has a slightly lean nose, brambly red berry fruit and sous-bois, though it lacks a bit of fruité. The palate is sharp at the entry, almost Pommard-like and focused, but it needs more flesh and depth at the finish.

The pretty ruby colour of the vintage. Less bouquet up front than the Bourgogne. More fruit concentration on the palate with a little crunch behind. Nice persistence.

From several parcels, including Ez Echards, Les Aussy, and Les Petits Gamets.

A slightly more deeply pitched nose reflects more earth and forest floor nuances on the red and dark currant scents. The attractively sleek and slightly denser, if less refined, medium-weight flavours have excellent energy, offering good depth and persistence on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finish.

About this wine

Volnay

Volnay

The finest and most elegant red wines of the Côte de Beaune are grown in Volnay, a village which might be twinned with Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits, for the high active chalk content in the soil and comparatively low clay content. Whereas in earlier times Volnay was made in a particularly light, early drinking style, these days there are many producers making wines which age extremely well.
