2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge, Château de Beaucastel, Rhône

Description

This wine is produced with grapes grown from a 110-hectare plot north of the appellation. The Mourvèdre dominant blend (40%) contains all 13 permitted varieties of the appellation. The nose is beautifully fragrant with redcurrants, blueberries, and strawberries. Darker forest fruits, white pepper and a hint of spice emerge on the palate with firm but glossy tannins.

Critics reviews

Alistair Cooper MW 17.5/20

Cask sample. Very inviting nose, liquorice, dark crushed cassis, leather, strawberry jam – earthy dark spice. A supple and ripe palate with good freshness and acidity throughout. Tight and fine, firm tannins, dark fruits, liquorice, thyme and a ripe savoury-tinged finish. Wonderful.

A deep, quite herbal expression, with liquorice and crushed blueberries to the cassis fruit. Full-bodied, powerfully fruited, dense and deep. Really mouthcoating, intense fruit. The tannins are ripe, fine and plentiful, all saturated in blackberry juice on a long finish. Certainly one of the more successful Châteauneufs this year. Will age well. A Mourvèdre-led expression of Beaucastel - it contains more than usual, at least 35% and probably more. Grenache and Cinsault fermented in cement, Syrah and Mourvèdre fermented in foudre.

About this wine

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The largest and most important appellation in the southern Rhône, with more than 3,200 hectares of vineyards and over 80 growers, Châteauneuf-du-Pape produces more wine than the whole of the northern Rhône combined. The gloriously rich red wines, redolent of the heat and herbs of the south, are enhanced by the complexity which comes from blending several of the 14 permitted grape varieties including Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.
