2021 Barolo, La Serra, Marcarini, Piedmont, Italy

Description

Marcarini has four hectares in this very fine site – almost a quarter of the whole vineyard, sitting a little to the south of the town of La Morra. The soil is very similar to its cellar sibling, Brunate, but La Serra sits higher on the slope which gives the wine a lighter texture.  Nevertheless, this is still a traditionally made and structured Barolo, made using only the best fruit from the vineyard, with 45 days’ skin contact with a submerged cap after fermentation followed by two years in botti grandi. It’s big and sturdy, solid and powerful.  The aromas lead with incense and truffle, with rose and red fruit emerging softly. With some air, the palate really opens up, demonstrating great dimension on the finish.

Critics reviews

Kerin O'Keefe 95/100
Menthol, wild rose, red berry and spice aromas shape the nose on the supremely elegant 2021 La Serra from Marcarini. It’s radiant and savory, delivering strawberry, cranberry and star anise before a minty finish. It’s still young and well balanced, with taut, refined tannins and fresh acidity.

The 2021 Barolo La Serra is a gorgeous wine from Marcarini. Macerated cherry, spice, orange peel and star anise give the 2021 a decidedly exotic profile, especially in its aromatics. Barolos from La Serra can be a bit angular, but the 2021 here is distinguished by its textural depth and persistence. This is a terrific showing.

A subtle wine with a restrained nose of Parma violets, austere cherry stones, licorice and balsamic. Medium-bodied with elegant, velvety tannins, chewy acidity, a huge structure and concentrated fruit. Tight, harmonious aftertaste. Try from 2026.

Sitting above the celebrated Brunate MGA, La Serra is a fresher and more ventilated site, yet of equal esteem at Marcarini – the estate first bottled it separately in 1973, and it sees a lengthy submerged cap maceration of up to 45 days. This sings with the estate’s signature fruit purity. Raspberry and strawberry are suffused with nutmeg, cinnamon and liquorice. Very pretty with equal depth as floral potpourri floods the palate. Crispy acidity offsets the ripe fruit sweetness. Elegant in proportions with a good dose of firm, chalky tannins providing appropriate frame, it lingers with distinct salinity.

The 2021 Barolo La Serra is contemplative and layered on the nose with aromas of redcurrants, porcini, fresh leather, anise, and floral incense. The palate is focused and pure, with its bright red fruits shining with refreshing acidity, fine, coiled tannins, and a long, graceful finish. It’s a lovely wine with a wide window for enjoyment over the coming 15-20 years.
