2021 Marsannay Rouge, Cuvée Saint-Urbain, Domaine Jean Fournier, Burgundy

Description

Laurent’s Marsannay Cuvée St Urbain is always a reliable wine, coming in large part from the fruit of 10- to 30-year-old vines in his single vineyard (future Premier Cru) sites. The 2021 is pretty, delicate and fine, with forward fruit and surprising layers of complexity.

Critics reviews

Allen Meadows 87-89/100

The name refers to a small tower located just behind the domaine; the fruit comes from 6 different lieux-dits.

Discreet wood sets off aromas of earthy red and dark raspberry. The caressing and seductively textured middleweight flavours possess very good punch that carries over to the mildly austere and saline-suffused finale. This should be approachable after only 2 to 3 years if desired.

A bright mid purple, with a fresher raspberry fruit on the nose. One third whole bunch vinification gives a lift on the palate, adds the white pepper note but the fruit remains more in raspberry mode. Slightly firm finish but long and with enough fruit to cover.

The 2021 Marsannay Cuvée St Urbain has a clean, redcurrant and raspberry-scented bouquet with commendable delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a little grainy in texture. The one-third whole bunches lend spice on the finish. Fine.

About this wine

Marsannay

Marsannay

Marsannay is the northernmost village and the only appellation in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, France, producing red and white wines. It is renowned for its red wines, primarily made from Pinot Noir grapes, but also creates a limited quantity of white wines from Chardonnay. Marsannay's terroir, characterised by limestone and clay soils, imparts a unique mineral complexity to its wines.
