2021 Crozes-Hermitage, Les Trois Chênes, Emmanuel Darnaud, Rhône

Description

This fine blend has a beautifully pure nose in 2021; it is intense and lifted with deep red and black hedgerow fruit moving into fresh blackberry with a hint of spice. There is an elegant character to the mouth-feel and the wine is deliciously juicy! Cherries, blackberries and raspberries mingle with fine, chalky tannins and a focused, limestone minerality on the long finish.

Critics reviews

Nicolas Greinacher 88/100

Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Coming in at 43 hl/Ha, roughly 40% more than in 2022, the 2021 Crozes-Hermitage Les Trois Chênes was fermented with 30% whole clusters. Delicate orange blossom, raspberry, cedar and leafy gradations emerge from the glass. Polished tannins gently structure this modestly concentrated 2021 red, concluding with good energy on the clean finale.

The 2021 Crozes-Hermitage Les Trois Chênes shows a forward, incredibly charming profile that has both red and black fruits, some peppery, cedary herb nuances, medium body, ripe, velvety tannins, and a good finish. As with everything from this estate, it's impeccably made and certainly makes the most of a difficult vintage! It's going to put a smile on your face any time over the coming 4-6 years.

One of the rising superstars in the Northern Rhône is unquestionably the young Emmanuel Darnaud, who pulls mostly from vines throughout the Crozes and Saint Joseph appellations. However, he has recently taken over the vines of Bernard Faurie in Hermitage, with 2021 being his first vintage producing an Hermitage. As I’ve written in the past, this is a vigneron you should have on your radar.

A focused nose of blackberries, cassis, dried herbs, peppercorns and violets. Medium body with a round and juicy core of fruits in the centre. Spicy and well-rounded with creamy tannins and a fruity, peppery finish.

About this wine

Crozes-Hermitage

Crozes-Hermitage

This is the largest AC in the Northern Rhône, producing over half of the Northern Rhône’s total production. The appellation was created in 1937 with the single commune of Crozes, but today there are 11 communes. The Syrah variety is king, but Marsanne and Roussanne are also permitted (up to 15 percent). The wines vary hugely in quality and style, with the majority of the reds fairly light in style.
