Description

Les Vercots is the first Premier Cru you meet, situated on the right as you approach the head of the valley leading to Pernand-Vergelesses. A layer of deeper, colder clay here gives the wine an edge of solidity. Franck describes this as a vin de connoisseur: a wine for someone prepared to wait for a cuvée, which, due to its concentration, can be slow to reveal itself. This has a fun bouquet of sous-bois and humus, and the tannins are firm, endorsing Franck’s advice.

An equal bright purple colour. Much sturdier in style than Chapitre, which is always the case. Impressive density and there is good life in the finish, thanks to the acidity. Needs time, but this has been well done.

The 2021 Aloxe-Corton Les Vercots 1er Cru offers ample red berry fruit on the nose with a light tertiary aspect, but it takes longer to open than the Clos du Chapitre. The palate is strict and linear. There’s a firm backbone here. It’s sapid and briny again) with some muscle on the finish. Give this another couple of years in bottle.

A very pretty, indeed perfumed, nose speaks of various red berries, floral nuances, and discreet spice nuances. The succulent and round medium-weight flavours also possess a lovely texture and good underlying tension before culminating in a balanced and even firmer finale. Les Vercots virtually always ages well, and this excellent example should as well.
