The ancient vines here were planted in 1913 and 1922, giving a wine of impressive weight and texture for a humble village appellation. There is plenty of density and spice, darker fruit too, but with chalky tannins from the limestone-rich soil.

The 2021 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Grands Liards comes from two parcels and was matured in a prudent 20% new oak. It has a pretty, airy, red cherry and raspberry-scented bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, harmonious with a simple, lightly spiced finish. It is not complex but displays rustic charm.

From a .52 ha holding of 80+ year-old vines.

There is just enough wood influence to mention that it is present in the cool and airy aromas of spiced plum, humus, and a whiff of forest floor. The super-sleek, intense, and beautifully detailed medium-weight flavours exude a subtle minerality on the balanced, long, and solidly complex finale that is just a bit firmer. This is also an unusually good Savigny village and is recommended.
