2020 Brunello di Montalcino, Tassi, Tuscany, Italy

Description

This 2.8-hectare single vineyard was planted in 1999 and is tucked between the gentle flow of the River Orcia and the hilltop of Castelnuovo dell’Abate at 250 metres altitude, just below Stella di Campalto’s vineyards. Here the strata of soils are a mix of iron-rich clay and Galestro, filled with calcareous marine fossils. Wild fermentation took place in concrete, with 30 days on skins followed by 36 months in botti. The 2020 had a slightly shorter skin contact at 20 days and the fruit is bright and creamy, with the firmer, more saline tannins of the vineyard only appearing at the end. It evokes a feeling of understated finesse.

Critics reviews

Walter Speller 15.5/20
Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Subdued nose without an enormous amount of fruit. Supple but already a little progressed on the palate. Not without interest but could have been fresher. Ready now.

The creamy texture from the fine tannins makes this wine irresistible. It’s medium-bodied with a lovely sensibility to it, and terrific length for the vintage. All about seduction and focus. So drinkable now, but will age beautifully. Drink or hold.

The Tassi 2020 Brunello di Montalcino, in the bottle with the white label, offers loads of sweet fruit, blackberry and blackcurrant combined with cinnamon and allspice. You also get a spicy hint of black pepper. Sweet oak flavors permeate a softly textured finish. Like other wines from this vintage, this Brunello remains quite accessible and balanced overall. This is a release of 6,700 bottles.

The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is spicy and deeply complex, with an array of dried roses, wild strawberries, hints of white pepper and crushed stone. It's round and soothing on the palate, with pretty violet-laced wild berry fruits and sweet spice, all motivated by a core of fresh acidity. This leaves a pleasantly chewy sensation, tapering off with medium length and freshness as rosy inner florals and an air of lavender linger on. The 2020 is already quite charming, with the balance for a long and open drinking window.

The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino comes from Castelnuovo dell'Abate and the old vines of Vigna Franci. It pours a bright red color and is lifted on the nose with aromas of preserved orange, cranberry, spice, and fresh roses. Medium-bodied, it's refreshing and juicy upfront, with fine tannins, ripe acidity, and a rather long finish. Very appealing, with a wide drinking window over the next 20 years, I would snap this up from restaurant lists.

The straight 2020 Brunello from Tassi opens with aromas suggesting toasted nut and charred earth accented by whiffs of leather, violet and dark exotic spice. On the rounded, already accessible palate, velvety tannins accompany dried cherry, baked plum and mocha before a drying finish.

About this wine

Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino

Along with Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino is Tuscany's most famous DOCG and its boldest expression of the Sangiovese grape. Located 30 miles south of Siena, its 2,000 hectares of vines are hemmed in by the Orcia, Asso and Ombrone valleys. Brunello is the local name for the Sangiovese Grosso clone from which Brunello di Montalcino should be made in its entirety. The wine cannot be released for sale until five years after the harvest.
