Description

In absence of the final blend, three component parts of the ’20 were tasted from foudres, demi muid barrels and tank. Each sample already showed the succulence of the vintage and the precision of the domaine, with notes of juicy blackberry, black cherry, spice and freshness, with an overriding, uplifting minerality. When blended, this promises to be utterly delicious.

Matt Walls 93/100

Very concentrated, deep kirsch and blackberry fruit. Deeper than most in 2020, with driving acidity and dense tannins, then a touch of fig on the finish. Fluid but concentrated, fresh, with a well-defined tannic structure. 50-year-old Grenache, with Syrah and Mourvèdre. Grown on clay limestone and marl, handpicked, part destemmed, aged in old barriques and foudres.

Gigondas has been feted for its high-quality wines since Roman times, although it wasn’t really until it was classified as a Côtes du Rhône Villages in 1966 that it began to realise its potential. It achieved AC status in 1971 and today produces some of the finest, most underrated and under-priced wines in the Rhône valley; although, for the last two of these at least, probably not for much longer.
