2020 Hermitage, La Maison Bleue, Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Rhône

Description

These 40-60-year-old vines grow on east-facing vineyards, primarily Les Murets. Fresh and juicy, brimming with blackberries, spiced raspberries and black forest gâteau. A hint of savoury emerges on the mid-palate, with notes of black olives and tar. There is an endearing softness to this wine thanks to the purity of the fruit and the silky tannins. Stunning.

Critics reviews

James Lawther MW 16.5/20

Expressive dark-fruit nose with cassis notes to the fore. Silky attack and texture, the tannins finely edged. Rich but fresh despite the alcohol. Lacks the gravitas of grand Hermitage but accessible earlier.

Mostly sourced from les Murets, the 2020 Hermitage La Maison Bleue is a solid effort, with appealing notes of blackberries, raspberries and espresso on the nose. It's full-bodied and rich, yet streamlined and focused, with savory tones of black olives appearing on the softly dusty finish. It should drink well young, yet age well for more than a decade.

About this wine

Hermitage

Hermitage

The most famous of all the northern Rhône appellations, its 120 hectares produce tiny quantities of very long-lived reds. The vines were grown in Roman times, although local folklore claims their origins to be 600 years earlier. The wines are powerful, with a deep colour and firm tannins, and the potential to age for many decades. The best Hermitage is produced from several climats blended together.
