2020 Volnay, Clos des Chênes, 1er Cru, Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur, Burgundy

Description

This 0.5-hectare site is equally split between the vineyard’s upper and lower sections, with plots planted in 1996, ’86 and ’81. The character of the vintage seems attuned to the house style, with the tannins firmly in place for ageing but with good maturity, not dominating the wine. This is serious, not flattering in youth, but confidently powerful.

Critics reviews

Jasper Morris MW 93/100
A rich ebullient purple. The fruit is perhaps a little on the sunnier side, some plums and ripe cherries, which are less typical Volnay descriptors. A firm and muscular finish, though the quality of the fruit is both impressive and not atypical of Volnay. Some pepperiness enhances the finish.

The 2020 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a fruit-driven bouquet, more red fruit here, and a touch of cassis. It is a little opulent, but it is controlled and focused. The oak is also nicely integrated. This is quite a complex Volnay. It shows a fine grip without the heaviness of other wines in this flight. The acidity maintains freshness and nerve. It becomes spicy/peppery towards the finish with a lengthy tail that delivers the sapidity you expect. Good potential. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

An earthier and more deeply pitched nose speaks of similar liqueur-like aromas of black raspberry, poached plum, pungent earth and discreet floral wisps. There is both excellent size and weight to the very punchy middle weight plus flavours that also brim with minerality on the suave, sappy, well-muscled and impressively persistent finish that also displays a hint of warmth. This beauty will need at least some bottle ageing to become more civilized.
