2020 Charmes-Chambertin, Grand Cru, Domaine Castagnier, Burgundy

Description

The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a more powerful and oaky bouquet than Taupenot-Merme's, though it remains well-defined, obviously requiring longer in bottle than its peers. This is one of the few Charmes-Chambertin wines that improves in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid, mainly black fruit and hints of boysenberry and orange rind. It's nicely structured and defined on the finish, although it doesn't have the terroir expression or charm of Taupenot-Merme.

Rich deep purple with a dark centre. The bouquet is joyous, ripe of course but not overdone. Explosion of rich ripe raspberry fruit. Some of those sun-dried cherries. Plenty of acidity, a few tannins, this is an exuberant success, Castagnier style.

About this wine

Charmes-Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin is one of the most famous Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy, and is also the name of the associated AOC of the wines produced from it. Pinot Noir is by far and away the primary grape grown in Charmes, although as with other Burgundy AOC regulations the wines are permitted up to 15 percent Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc or Pinot Gris as auxiliary grapes.
