2020 Brunello di Montalcino, Máté, Tuscany, Italy

Description

Máté’s Brunello comes from 4.5 hectares of old vines, on Galestro and Calcareous soils. Fermentation is carried out in both stainless steel and 40-hectolitre French oak casks, before 36 months maturation in tonneaux. Máté’s 2020 is sweet and graceful, with an aromatic lift and artistic flair. Everything about this is immaculate and precise, while still showing so much soul. The palate is filled with blackcurrant, juicy pomegranate and extreme energy.

Critics reviews

Walter Speller 17+/20

Lustrous and just mid ruby. Lifted nose of balsamic, mint and oak notes mingling with dark cherry. Succulent cherry fruit with just the right dose of chewy tannins. Polished and elegant with a fragrant finish.

Drink 2025 - 2032

Walter Speller, JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2024)
Eric Guido 90/100

Vibrant black cherry combines with autumnal spices, mentholated herbs and hints of camphor as the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino comes to life in the glass. This is juicy and round with lifted wild berry fruits and hints of violet pastille, all guided by fresh acidity. Its minerality comes through in the finish, mingling with fine tannins and nuances of licorice as the 2020 tapers off with admirable length and a sweet herbal thrust. Drink 2026 - 2034.

Eric Guido, Vinous.com (Nov 2024)
James Suckling 94/100

Beautiful sweet cherries and berries with a hint of watermelon on the nose. Fragrant. It’s medium-bodied with fresh acidity and a bright, vivid finish. Lots of energy and crunch.

About this wine

Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino

Along with Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino is Tuscany's most famous DOCG and its boldest expression of the Sangiovese grape. Located 30 miles south of Siena, its 2,000 hectares of vines are hemmed in by the Orcia, Asso and Ombrone valleys. Brunello is the local name for the Sangiovese Grosso clone from which Brunello di Montalcino should be made in its entirety. The wine cannot be released for sale until five years after the harvest.
