Pouring a jewelled ruby colour, the 2020 Barolo San Lorenzo Di Verduno is a bit more reserved on opening, with notes of fresh red cherries, then takes a darker mineral tone aromatically, with a hint of black truffle, freshly crushed flowers, and fresh earth. The palate reveals more depth and richness while being light on its feet, with sweet tannins, more sapidity, a mouthwatering mineral tone, and a delicate glycerol richness. It has an approachable feel and will have a wide drinking window over the next 10-15 years.

Verduno. It’s lustrous and just mid-ruby. Embracing ripe red fruit on the nose with ethereal balsamic hints and a suggestion of eucalyptus and dark earth. Succulent fruit that is still a little closed. Generous yet focused and with finely ground, almost aromatic tannins. It has great length and a full spread on the finish, but it still needs time.

The 2020 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno is a pretty wine for this site, albeit a bit quieter than most years. Black cherry, new leather, liquorice, lavender, dried herbs and gravel are nicely woven together. In 2020, the San Lorenzo showed its typical savoury mineral profile but possesses less richness and tannic heft than is typical of most vintages.
