Description
These high, east-facing 40 year-old vines grow on very steep, cool chalky soils. The wine’s structure always provides an austere gratification, but it is the perfumes that beguiles. In youth there is a clear and unmistakeable essence of pomegranate which, in this cellar, only occurs in this wine and, with time, this translates into something ethereally vivid and ascetic. Again, the more sensual texture of this vintage adds another dimension. It’s a beautifully serious wine.

Critics reviews
The 2020 Barolo Serra is a nervy, taut Serralunga Barolo. White pepper, chalk, mint, dried flowers, crushed rocks and orange peel drive through a core of red-toned fruit, adding brightness and tension throughout. Readers who enjoy tense, salivating Barolos will find plenty of those qualities here. Pretty floral overtones brighten the finish nicely.
This is a terrific set of 2020 Barolos from Davide Rosso. The wines show more precision and nuance than in the past, which is great to see. The 2020s spent 25 days on skins with regular pumpovers and punchdowns. Wines were settled naturally and then racked into cask in early 2021. The Barolos spent three years in French oak casks, except for the Vignarionda, which sees only Slavonian oak.
Drink 2027 - 2035
The Giovanni Rosso 2020 Barolo Serra comes from a beautiful panoramic amphitheatre of vines. This wine has an etched and vertical quality you recognise in its lifted bouquet. Sweet cherry and plum are folded into riper blackberry coulis and raspberry tart aromas. The tannins are elegant and firm, and the wine offers a very good length and freshness.
Drink 2026 - 2042
Youthful and poppy red/orange in colour, the 2020 Barolo Serra is a little more nervous, as it was bottled just a week before I tasted it. Showing signs of needing air, it offers notes of ripe cherries, mint, blood orange zest, and a touch of eucalyptus, with bright lift. Medium-bodied, it has good intensity, an elegant and weightless feel, and a floating personality. It has a very nice length and gains intensity on the finish. It’s a very successful wine in this vintage to drink over the next 15-20 years.
