2020 Barolo, Gattera, Mauro Veglio, Piedmont, Italy

La Morra. Just mid-ruby with orange tinges. Perfumed, layered and concentrated on the nose and with a subtle oak note. Polished fruit without any edges and sandpapery tannins in equal doses. It's a pretty wine.

Drink 2024 - 2036

Round and textural with notes of red berries, spiced cherries and orange blossom. Medium-bodied with tight, chewy tannins. Powdery texture on the palate with a crunchy red fruit character and fresh acidity. Red currants come through in the finish.

Try after 2026

The 2020 Barolo Gattera is a dark, at times somber, La Morra Barolo. Black cherry, plum, lavender, licorice, dried herbs and mocha all meld together. Pliant and deep, with notable concentration and breadth on the palate, the Gattera is a fine example of this site. Today, the 2020 is a bit closed, but I see that as a positive.

Drink 2025 - 2038

For co-owner Alessandro Veglio, 2020 is a ‘2018 with more flesh’. Gattera’s limestone soils provide good structure. A quite stern nose of cherry kernel, rhubarb, fresh violet, and blood orange isis is followed by a savoury and filigree palate, with a texture to the tannins of rare elegance. The finish is full and broad, with hints of cherry kernel.
