2020 Brunello di Montalcino, Scopetone, Tuscany, Italy

Description

This is a careful selection from the Scarnacuoia vineyard, with the oldest vines planted in 1978. The ancient soils here are rich with volcanic influence and large fossilised shells – lending enchanting complexity and mineral bite to the final wines. The wine spends 36 months in large 33-hectolitre Pauscha botti, before 6 months resting in bottle.

Loredana freely admits that the 2019 was the greatest wine they have ever made, but the 2020 does not pale in comparison. It has a more open weave and the wine is more forward, but the juicy pomegranate notes are well to the fore as usual and there is no sense of the warmth of the vintage. The palate finishes beautifully fresh and lively.

Critics reviews

Walter Speller 16/20

Just mid ruby. Marasca cherry, pine, hints of smoke and tobacco leaf. Light cherry-fruit palate with a thick layer of powdery tannins. Lacks a little in fruit for the tannic load.

Sour cherries are complemented by cedar shavings and spiced orange hints as the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino slowly evolves in the glass. This is youthfully tight and lean, with a core of tart red berry fruits and mineral tones that saturate under an air of rosy inner florals. Gently tannic and long, the 2020 leaves the senses drenched in primary concentration. Patience is needed to allow this to fill out and put on some weight.

A juicy and fruity red with plum, cherry and ripe orange-peel character. It’s medium-bodied with a round and polished tannin texture and a fruity finish. Very drinkable now, but will improve with age.

About this wine

Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino

Along with Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino is Tuscany's most famous DOCG and its boldest expression of the Sangiovese grape. Located 30 miles south of Siena, its 2,000 hectares of vines are hemmed in by the Orcia, Asso and Ombrone valleys. Brunello is the local name for the Sangiovese Grosso clone from which Brunello di Montalcino should be made in its entirety. The wine cannot be released for sale until five years after the harvest.
