2020 Brunello di Montalcino, Lisini, Tuscany, Italy

Description

When we visited the estate last year, Carlo Lisini told us to expect great things from the 2020 and new winemaker, Alessandro Margioni. Tasting this year, it is abundantly clear he could not have been more right. With the 2020 vintage, the Brunello at this address has found a new gear. Reducing the time in oak, this now spends 36 months in barrel (vs 42 months previously), keeping a little more of the pretty details to the fruit on show and following a welcomed trend in the region.

As is typical of the vintage, the 2020 has a vibrant aromatic push and is brilliantly expressive, with deep notes of blackcurrant and complex red and black cherry. The tannins are grippy and energetic but resolved and balanced. The change in style at Lisini is not dramatic, but there is a lot more detail in the wines this year.

Critics reviews

Walter Speller 17.5/20

Impenetrable dark crimson and enormous colour both for the vintage and the grape variety. Firm, concentrated dark cherry and blueberry peppered with spice and notes of oak – super-skilfully done. Suave and lots of concentration, perfectly balanced and layered with fine tannins. Definitely needs another year in bottle.

The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a total pleasure to take in, with its florist shop bouquet of perfumed violet, lavender and wet stone complementing dusty dried strawberries and hints of rhubarb. Zesty and fresh, sporting medium-bodied weight, it sweeps across the palate with tart wild berry fruit and lavender tones, propelled by zesty acidity. The 2020 doesn't skip a beat, finishing with silty tannins, tinges of licorice and sour citrus and fantastic length.

Here is the epitome of 2020’s seductiveness: dark exotic berries are tinged with a scent of juniper, while the palate strikes an arresting fusion of black cherry and lush apricot, with a ferruginous facet. Fulsome without being weighty, it deftly balances sumptuousness with rigour as firm tannins mark their territory. With this vintage, Lisini finally returns to its full lineup of Brunello. It is difficult to imagine the Ugolaia or Riserva bottlings topping this, however we will have to wait until next year to see how those wines fare.

The full-bodied 2020 Lisini Brunello has intense balsamic aromas of camphor and eucalyptus that mingle with violet, dark-skinned berry and dark spice. Bold, high-toned and already delicious even at this primary stage, the firm, enveloping palate delivers crushed raspberry, fleshy Morello cherry, star anise and white pepper before a black tea finish. Tightly woven, close-grained tannins provide the backbone while fresh acidity keeps it lifted.

About this wine

Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino

Along with Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino is Tuscany's most famous DOCG and its boldest expression of the Sangiovese grape. Located 30 miles south of Siena, its 2,000 hectares of vines are hemmed in by the Orcia, Asso and Ombrone valleys. Brunello is the local name for the Sangiovese Grosso clone from which Brunello di Montalcino should be made in its entirety. The wine cannot be released for sale until five years after the harvest.
