Description

“We grew up in the area dreaming about Burgundy,” says Ale, “and if there is a Grand Cru here, it’s this one.” Veglio’s tiny 0.39-hectare plot produces just 2,000 bottles per year and has been labeled as a Riserva since the 2016 vintage. Previously, new oak percentages for Rocche reached as high as 50%, but a backhanded compliment from Laurent Ponsot led them to gradually reduce its use. The result is a thrilling wine with endless complexity and finesse, featuring delineated black fruit and sweet liquorice highlights. Composed and self-assured, it achieves an impeccable balance.

Aromas of cranberry, dog rose, hay, oak and coffee bean shape the nose on the 2019 Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva from Mauro Veglio. Linear and elegantly structured, the tight, youthfully austere palate delivers pomegranate, orange zest, dark spice and toasted hazelnut before a salty close. Firm, refined tannins and bright acidity provide the framework. Give this time to fully develop.

The 2019 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata is a potent wine. The more floral, savory side of Rocche dell'Annunziata comes through in a deep, virile Barolo that drinks well today. As always, there's a bit more new oak in the Rocche than in the other Barolos because of the small size of Veglio's parcel.
