2019 Brunello di Montalcino, Riserva, Molino di Sant'Antimo, Tuscany, Italy

Description

A key part of the selection for the Riserva is utilising the freshest vineyards, to ensure the slow and gentle evolution of the Riserva in bottle. The 2019 comes from the best fruit of the Romana site, as well as Varco and Pian di Rota. The vinification is the same as the Brunello, before spending 48 months in large, 20-hectolitre casks before around 10-12 months in bottle before release. The DNA is perceptibly similar, but finds another gear of complexity, with rosemary, thyme and leather character playing among the glistening red and black berry fruit. This is an exceptional Riserva, with a long life ahead of it.

Critics reviews

Kerin O'Keefe 97/100

Aromas of Mediterranean scrub, eucalyptus, dark spice and blue wild flower propel out of the glass along with whiffs of new leather on the fantastic 2019 Brunello Riserva from Molino di Sant’Antimo. Racy and youthfully austere at this young stage, and that’s a good thing for a wine destined for lengthy aging, the radiant palate features red cherry, pomegranate, anise, spiced orange zest and menthol set against a backbone of firm, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it balanced and loaded with energy. This offers serious aging potential and needs time to fully develop.

About this wine

Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino

Along with Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino is Tuscany's most famous DOCG and its boldest expression of the Sangiovese grape. Located 30 miles south of Siena, its 2,000 hectares of vines are hemmed in by the Orcia, Asso and Ombrone valleys. Brunello is the local name for the Sangiovese Grosso clone from which Brunello di Montalcino should be made in its entirety. The wine cannot be released for sale until five years after the harvest.
