2019 Barolo, del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba, Mauro Veglio, Piedmont, Italy

Description

2019 is the first vintage for the Mauro Veglio’s Commune di Serralunga. The wine was produced from rented vines that cover 4.5 hectares, but are shared with a friend of the estate. Fruit is sourced partially from the Manocino vineyard, located in a south-west-facing sector, which sits just below the winery of our friend Davide Rosso. It also comes from Lirano, which adjoins Manocino to the north. Both sites have the classic white Serralunga soils, and the resulting wine is zippy and fizzing with energy. Aged only in botte – albeit new ones – this has a lovely, bright and pure expression.

Critics reviews

Walter Speller 17/20

22 days on the skins. Aged in large 3,000-litre oak casks of untoasted French oak.

A little more lustrous than their straight Barolo, and just mid-ruby. A little more concentration and more depth on the nose, too, with hints of sweet raspberry fruit and a suggestion of spice underneath. Fragrant raspberry fruit with lots of gripping tannins, but although formidable, the big structure doesn’t overwhelm the fruit. Lots of acidity. Closes up rashly on the finish. Promising, but much too tannic to approach now.

Only 6,500 bottles were made.

Here's a new wine to join the Mauro Veglio portfolio. The 2019 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is a bit closed on the first nose and not fully expressive at this early stage—dried cherry skin and lavender transition to rosemary essence and cedarwood. The aromas are a little muddled, but this hearty, medium-weight wine should hopefully unwind with more cellar age.

This Serralunga Barolo is released for the first time this year by Mauro Veglio. The Nebbiolo comes from 300-400 metres above sea level in the Manocino and Lirano MGAs on Lequio formation limestone. The wine is mostly floral, with an intoxicating aroma of violet, cinnamon and rich, meaty cherry fruit. The attack is fully and fiercely austere, with very classic firm, dusty tannins underlined by crisp acidity. The finish is grainy and not dry, so it deserves patience and attention.

Vineyard sources are: Lirano and Manocino.

The 2019 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba is laced with hints of tobacco, cedar, dried herbs, menthol, sage and mint, all of which infuse the 2019 with tons of character. The Serralunga is a gorgeous Barolo, a wine full of intrigue that will enjoy a fine evolution in bottle for at least a decade or so. It is a very good first effort. My impression is that this will only get better in future vintages.

The rose petal and ripe strawberry and orange blossom aromas come through nicely. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a long and flavorful finish. It has finesse and focus. It's very attractive now but better in two or three years.

Notes of lavender, black raspberry, and licorice candy emerge from the medium-bodied 2019 Barolo Del Comune Di Serralunga D’Alba, followed by ripe dark berries that fill the palate with sweet tannins and a weightless feel. Its more dark-fruited profile is expressive of Serralunga d’Alba while also feeling supple and approachable for its youth.
