2019 Saumur Blanc, Bréze, Domaine Guiberteau, Loire

A parcel in Brézé. Sandy-silty clay over tuffeau. Aged 24 months in barrel 50% new) and certified organic.

Bright, clear colour. Toasted oak on the nose. It is the same on the palate, but less so, as the oak is beginning to be absorbed into the wine. A little more volume and breadth thanks to the oak) but still lively with plenty of bright acidity. Good length. Needs time to come together.

Aromas of caramel, oak, spices and white flowers preface the 2019 Brézé from Domaine Guiberteau. It’s a medium-bodied, broad, dense white with a somewhat phenolic structure and austere, relatively firm finish. While impeccably crafted, its oakiness exceeds my personal preference.

Founded in 1935, this family estate has experienced international expansion thanks to Romain Guiberteau’s efforts. Since adopting organic farming practices in 2003, the estate now covers 20 hectares, predominantly in the commune of Brézé, renowned for its limestone subsoils. The vinification process remains traditional, emphasising control over microbiological factors, while élevages take place in vats and wooden tanks, supplemented by select barrels from the coopers Rousseau and Dussiaux. This estate is highly regarded for producing precise, vibrant, structured and richly mineral wines.
