The vineyards are located on a south-facing ancient escarpment in Appledore, Kent, near Goodwood, West Sussex. The soils are largely clay-based, with subsoils including sand and seashells in Kent and predominantly chalk soils with flint loam in the South Downs in West Sussex. The microclimate is warm and dry, with moderating coastal breezes due to the vineyard’s close proximity to the English Channel.

Whole bunch pressed and naturally settled for 12-24 hours. Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with a small percentage fermented in old oak barrels for complexity. Minimum 39 months of lees ageing. 9.0 g/l residual sugar.

Producer note

Pale gold in colour with a fine, persistent mousse, the wine’s nose brims with bright citrus notes of ripe lemon and orange peel, along with green apple and Williams pear. The wine is focused and elegant on the palate, driven by more citrus and orchard fruits, with stone fruit notes of white peach. The fruit sits alongside a richer pâtisserie character of toasted nuts, brioche, and lemon meringue pie. The mouthfeel is linear and fresh, adding a zesty mineral note to the long finish. It is a natural pairing with seafood, like oysters or a platter of fruits de mer. It also works well with a warm goat’s cheese tart.

About this wine

Kent

Located south-east of London, Kent is home to a growing number of exciting English wine producers, notably Gusbourne Estate, Chapel Down and Hush Heath Estate. These estates specialise in English sparkling wine made using the so-called traditional method, best known for its use in making Champagne. Indeed, Champagne Taittinger chose Kent as the location for its own English vineyard, Domaine Evremond.
