2019 Barolo, La Serra, Marcarini, Piedmont, Italy

Description

The La Serra vineyard sits high on a small shoulder of La Morra hill, its name translating to “ridge” in the local dialect. The soil here is very similar to that of the more powerful Brunate cru, yet it is a slightly cooler site which always yields firmness, freshness in the glass, and an archetypal La Morra style. The wine spent 56 days on its skins, showing the quality of the fruit picked at harvest, followed by two years in botti grande. This has a vertical nose, which is herbal and perfumed. The palate is compact, with hidden details and smoky, floral hints. The tannins are firm, muscular and fine. This is very long and needs time.

Critics reviews

Walter Speller 17++/20

La Morra. Just mid-ruby with orange tinges. Red fruit and cranberry lifted by subtle oak. Fragrant, supple red fruit that still needs to unfurl fully. Firm yet ripe tannins. Right now, austere, yet very pretty.

Antonio Galloni 93/100

The 2019 Barolo La Serra is a super-classic wine from this La Morra site. Bright acids, bracing minerals and striking aromatics - all La Serra signatures - come through loud and clear. Medium in body, with terrific freshness and plenty of verve, the 2019 is wonderfully expressive today. It will drink well with minimal cellaring.

Aldo Fiordelli 95/100

La Serra is typically harvested later compared, for example, to Brunate) and is mostly focused on elegance. This 2019 features red currants, cinnamon, Parma violets, and lots of mint, anise, and liquorice. The palate is tight, firm, and dusty, with extracted but balanced tannins of good sweet grain, leading to a juicy, savoury, and long finish full of tension. This is a very classic style from a classic vintage.

James Suckling 95/100

Vivid aromas of strawberries, oranges and peach skins with some cherries and cedar. Medium body, tight and firm with a fresh and vivid finish. It needs time to soften.
