2019 Brunello di Montalcino, Riserva, Máté, Tuscany, Italy

Description

Candace and Ferenc’s jewel from Santa Restituta, the 2019 Riserva is the ultimate expression of their work. The Riserva starts in the vineyard, with a careful selection picked separately – part of the reason for production being excruciatingly small (just 3,000 bottles). The Riserva sees 46 months ageing before around six months in bottle prior to release. This is extremely impressive and easy to get lost in. The palate is so carefully sculpted with delicate notes of black cherry, blood orange and wild herbs. The finish is guided by perfectly ripe, sweet tannins and a powerful yet fine structure. Completely harmonious.

Critics reviews

Walter Speller 17.5/20

Mid to deep maturing ruby with orange tinges. Gorgeous, dramatic nose of cherry, dried mint and cardamom notes. Lots of juice on the palate with the perfect dose of tannins adding chew to the long cherry-and-mint finish. Fantastic focus and length.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva opens with a confectionary mix of baked cherries, cedar spice box, dark chocolate and mint. It's seamlessly silky and round with depths of ripe red and black fruits accentuated by hints of clove and a bitter tinge of cocoa. The 2019 leaves the palate caked in fine-grained wood tannins as hints of sweet lavender and violet pastille taper off slowly. Despite a lot of oak sensations, the 2019 maintains a lovely balance. That said, this style will not be for everyone.

About this wine

Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino

Along with Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino is Tuscany's most famous DOCG and its boldest expression of the Sangiovese grape. Located 30 miles south of Siena, its 2,000 hectares of vines are hemmed in by the Orcia, Asso and Ombrone valleys. Brunello is the local name for the Sangiovese Grosso clone from which Brunello di Montalcino should be made in its entirety. The wine cannot be released for sale until five years after the harvest.
