This wine was one of the highlights of my tasting with Mauro Mascarello and his family. The Giuseppe Mascarello 2019 Barolo Perno Vigna Santo Stefano opens to mid-weight intensity with deep layers of cherry, raspberry and cassis. You also get crushed stone and hints of dried mint. Perhaps what stands out most in this wine is the balanced acidity that renders a sense of brightness and lightness to this otherwise age-worthy Barolo.

The translucent ruby-coloured 2019 Barolo Perno is even spicier, revealing a great nose of wild, fresh red cherries, fresh roses, sweet fruit, and sweet, fresh herbs. On the palate, it offers ripe and approachable tannins with a plush, velvety feel. I love this wine, which has both savoury richness and great length, with long notes of apricot on the finish. It’s going to have a wide drinking window. Fantastic.
