2019 Brunello di Montalcino, Gemini, Riserva, La Serena, Tuscany, Italy

Description

The land for this vineyard, which stands immediately in front of the house, was bought from the church in 1987, and the first vines were planted in 1993. Andrea seeks the minimum period of oak maturation (36 months in 78-hl botti by Pauscha), looking instead for a gloriously pure expression of terroir. It is thus both a Riserva and a Cru and is always the last vineyard to be picked. The 2019 carries the expectation of the vintage well. It is heady and very perfumed, with lots of interest and dimension, and latent power unfolding on the finish – certainly a keeper.

Critics reviews

Michaela Morris 94/100

Gemini hails from a single plot of 25-year-old vines sitting at 400 metres above sea level on a mix of clay and sandy marls. Fermented and refined in 70-hectolitre truncated cone vats, the 2019 is über-clean, allowing its charismatic personality to shine. Penetrating floral scents are joined by rosemary and a suggestion of ground rocks, and the palate is awash with dark raspberry, pomegranate and a dollop of liquorice. A sleek and satisfying package, this is impeccably balanced by a firm spine of chocolaty tannins and brisk acidity.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva takes its time in the glass. This features an array of sweet spice, pipe tobacco and minty herbs elevating dried strawberry notes. It's soothingly round and pliant, with fresh acidity and masses of vibrant black cherry fruit and brilliant acidity that maintains a fantastic balance. A web of crisp tannins defines the finish, which is youthfully structured and long. It tapers off with a tart cranberry concentration and hints of bitter clove.

Firm and structured with dark berries and raspberries as well as cherry character, chocolate and smoky oak. Medium-bodied, this has solid structure and an intense finish. From organically grown grapes. Needs three or four years to soften and open.

About this wine

Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino

Along with Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino is Tuscany's most famous DOCG and its boldest expression of the Sangiovese grape. Located 30 miles south of Siena, its 2,000 hectares of vines are hemmed in by the Orcia, Asso and Ombrone valleys. Brunello is the local name for the Sangiovese Grosso clone from which Brunello di Montalcino should be made in its entirety. The wine cannot be released for sale until five years after the harvest.
